Instagram or a Website? What Your Business Loses Without One

What Instagram does, what a website does, and why both lead to your WhatsApp. A side-by-side comparison for local businesses in Mexico.

Instagram helps people discover you and remember you. A website helps people find you when they search for you on Google. A local business is better off with both, because both lead to the same place: its WhatsApp. If you only have Instagram, you lose the people who search for you on Google and the people who don't use the app.

"Instagram is enough" is the most common response when someone offers a website to a business in Mexico. It makes sense: the business already posts photos, already gets messages, and already sells over WhatsApp. The better question is what each one does for the business and what you lose when one is missing.

What each one is

These terms get mixed up a lot, so it helps to separate them:

Term What it is Who controls it
Instagram profile Your account on a social network, with photos, stories, and messages The platform
Web page A page with your business's information, on your own domain You
Website A set of pages (home, services, contact) under the same domain You
Landing page A single page built for one action, like booking an appointment or buying something You
Google Business Profile The listing that shows up on Google Maps with your hours, reviews, and phone number You, inside Google

A website isn't a social network. On a social network, you post inside someone else's platform and it decides who sees you. On your website, you decide what it says and anyone can open it from a link.

What Instagram does well

Instagram is great for three things:

  1. Showing off your work. Photos of haircuts, dishes, before and afters, finished jobs.
  2. Staying top of mind. Stories and posts remind your customers that you exist.
  3. Getting messages. Lots of people ask about prices by DM.

If your business depends on people seeing photos and wanting what they see, Instagram is a must. Nobody's going to tell you to drop it.

What Instagram doesn't do for your business

Get you on Google

When someone looks for a service in their area, they usually search on Google or Google Maps. For searches like "auto repair near me" or "bakery in Puebla," websites and Google listings show up. Your Instagram profile almost never does.

Belong to you

Your account exists for as long as the platform wants it to. If it gets suspended, hacked, or the algorithm changes, you lose the channel. A website on your own domain is still yours.

Show the basics in one place

Hours, address, prices, directions, whether you take cards. On Instagram, that lives in a story highlight, a comment, or your bio. On a website, it's all together and makes sense in seconds.

Work for people who don't use the app

Someone without an account only sees part of your profile, and the app keeps asking them to log in. Anyone can open a website from a link, on any phone.

Instagram vs. a website

Instagram Website
People find you on Google Rarely Yes, if it's built right
Shows hours, address, and prices clearly Partly Yes
You own it No, it depends on the platform Yes, with your own domain
Works without an account Limited Yes
Good for showing photos and news Very good Good
Leads to WhatsApp With a link in your bio With a button in every section
Tells you how many customers came in Per-post metrics WhatsApp clicks, calls, and form submissions

WhatsApp is where the sale happens

In Mexico, a lot of local business sales close in a chat. A Boston Consulting Group study cited by Expansión in October 2024 found that 75% of Mexican businesses already use messaging apps as part of their sales process. On the customer side, INEGI's 2025 ENDUTIH survey reports that 93.0% of internet users in Mexico use it to communicate, 89.2% for social media, and 97.3% go online with a smartphone.

That's why a website doesn't compete with WhatsApp. Its job is to send more people to that chat. Here's what the path looks like:

  1. Someone searches "vet clinic in Zapopan" on Google.
  2. They find your website and see your hours, your photos, and your reviews.
  3. They tap the WhatsApp button and message you.

If you only had Instagram, that person would have messaged the vet clinic that did show up on Google.

When Instagram is enough

Instagram is enough for a local business when it only sells to customers who already know it, when it has more work than it can handle, or when it sells something on impulse that almost nobody searches for on Google. In those cases the website can wait. In every other case, the business is losing the people who are looking for it:

  • You only sell to people who already know you or were referred to you.
  • You have more customers than you can handle.
  • Your product is an impulse buy and almost nobody searches for it on Google.

Signs you need a website now

  • Someone told you, "I couldn't find you."
  • Your local competitors show up on Google and you don't.
  • Your customers always ask the same things: hours, prices, address.
  • You're in an industry people search for on Google: dentists, auto shops, lawyers, vet clinics, salons, plumbers, schools. In who you sell to, you'll see what a website needs for each one.
  • You want to know how many customers you're getting and where they come from.

How to add your website to Instagram

To add your website to Instagram, go to your profile, tap Edit profile, then Links and Add external link, paste the address, and save. The link shows up in your bio. Then add a link to your Instagram on your website so the two are connected:

  1. On Instagram, go to your profile and tap Edit profile.
  2. Tap Links and then Add external link.
  3. Paste your website's address and save.
  4. On your website, add a link to your Instagram profile.

If your website has a WhatsApp button, anyone who comes in from your bio can message you with one tap.

FAQ

Do I need a website if I already have Instagram?

A business needs a website even if it has Instagram if its customers search for it on Google. Instagram shows its work to people who already follow it. A website shows up when someone searches for the service in the area and sends them to the business's WhatsApp. If almost all of its customers come from referrals, Instagram may be enough for now.

Are websites social media?

No, a website isn't social media. On a social network, you post inside another company's platform and its algorithm decides who sees you. A website lives on your own domain, you decide what it says, and anyone can open it from a link, even if they don't have an account on any social network.

How do I add my website to Instagram?

To add your website to Instagram, open your profile, tap Edit profile, then Links and Add external link. Paste your website's full address and save your changes. The link shows up in your bio, and anyone who taps it lands on your website, where they can message you on WhatsApp.

Can I use my Instagram as a website?

You can put your Instagram link on your Google Business Profile, but your profile doesn't work like a website: it almost never shows up in searches like "dentist in Coyoacán," and people without an account only see part of it. To get found on Google, you need a website on your own domain.

Does a website replace my social media?

No, a website doesn't replace a business's social media. Instagram and Facebook are for sharing news and keeping customers thinking about you. A website is where people land when they search for you on Google, with your hours, address, and prices, and from there they message you on WhatsApp.

How much does it cost to have a website?

Having a website in Mexico costs MX$999 to MX$3,500 a year if you build it yourself on a platform like Wix, and MX$3,000 to MX$15,000 with a freelancer, according to New Emage and GoDaddy LATAM. On top of that, you pay for the domain, hosting, and maintenance, from MX$300 to MX$2,000 a month depending on what's included.
