To create a website with AI for free, sign up for an AI website builder with a free plan (Wix, Webnode, Webador, or Durable), describe your business in two or three sentences, and let the AI build the first version. Then check the text, photos, hours, and WhatsApp button, and publish. On a free plan, your site lives on the provider's subdomain; your own .com or .com.mx domain costs extra.

This guide is for business owners and for people who build websites for others. It explains what AI does and doesn't do, the steps to get your site live in an afternoon, what "free" really costs, and what to check before you publish so Google and your customers trust it.

Quick summary

  • Yes, you can do it for free, but on the provider's subdomain and, in some cases, with ads. To use your own domain, you need a paid plan.
  • AI builds the first version in minutes: structure, text, and images. What it doesn't know is your real hours, your prices, or your WhatsApp number.
  • Google doesn't penalize a website for being made with AI. It penalizes content made only to manipulate rankings.
  • The step people skip most is the review: AI makes up testimonials, years of experience, and prices your business doesn't have.
  • Searches for free AI website builders are growing fastest: in Spanish, "ia para hacer pagina web gratis" rose 438% and "crear una pagina web con ia gratis" rose 296% in one year across the five markets we measured.

What it means to create a website with AI

"Building a website with AI" can mean three different things, and it helps to know which one you want before you open an account:

Type of tool What the AI does Examples Who it's for
AI website builder Asks you questions or takes a description and builds a site you then edit by hand Wix, Hostinger, Squarespace, Webnode, Webador, Durable Business owners who want to do it themselves
Chat-based site or app generator You type what you want and the AI generates the design or the code; every change is requested by chat Framer, Lovable People who want something more custom and don't mind technical tools
Platform for people who sell websites The AI builds each client's site from their business details and makes changes by chat The Biz Layer Freelancers, social media managers, and agencies

In all three cases, the AI does the same job: it saves you from the blank page. What changes is who edits afterward and how much control you have.

What the data says: searches for free AI builders are growing

We pulled Google search volume for these Spanish-language queries in Mexico, Spain, Colombia, Argentina, and the United States (Spanish). We used Google Ads data through DataForSEO, pulled on November 3, 2026. These are monthly averages over the last 12 months.

Search (Spanish) Meaning Monthly searches (5 countries) Mexico One-year change
crear pagina web con ia create a website with AI 2,140 480 -17%
crear pagina web gratis con ia create a free website with AI 1,390 390 +7%
ia para crear paginas web AI to create websites 1,210 320 +5%
crear pagina web con ia gratis create a website with AI for free 670 110 +30%
crear una pagina web con ia gratis create a website with AI for free 350 50 +296%
ia para hacer pagina web gratis free AI to make a website 240 70 +438%
como crear una pagina web (no AI) how to create a website 11,800 3,600 -48%

Three things stand out:

  1. Searches that include "free" are growing fastest. People want to try AI before they pay.
  2. The general query "crear pagina web con ia" fell 17%, while its "free" variants rose. People already know AI exists; now they look for the option that doesn't charge them to try it.
  3. The classic query "how to create a website" fell 48% over the same period. Some of those people no longer want a tutorial; they want a tool that does it for them.

We also checked the top 10 Google results for "ia para crear paginas web" in Mexico and in Spain. In both, a Reddit thread and a YouTube video show up in the top five, next to the builders' own pages. That's a sign people still can't find a clear answer and are comparing opinions.

Step by step: build your website with AI in an afternoon

1. Decide what your website needs to do

A local business website almost always has one job: get the customer to message you, call you, or walk into your shop. Before you open any tool, write in one line what you want visitors to do. For example: "send me a WhatsApp message to book an appointment."

It's not a small detail. According to GoDaddy's 2025 Global Entrepreneurship Survey, 41% of small businesses in Mexico operate mainly through social media, and only 12% use their website as their main channel. The website that works is the one that sends people to the channel where you already sell, which is often WhatsApp. We explain this in Instagram vs. a website.

2. Gather your information before you start

AI works better with real data. Have these ready:

  • Business name and type ("auto repair shop," "dog grooming")
  • Address, area, and which neighborhoods or towns you serve
  • Real hours, including Saturdays and holidays
  • Phone and WhatsApp number
  • Your 3 to 6 main services and, if you publish them, their prices
  • 5 to 10 real photos: storefront, interior, team, finished work
  • Your logo, if you have one

With this in a note, the rest takes minutes.

3. Pick the tool

If you've never built a website, start with a builder that has a free plan so you can try it without a card. We compared pricing, free plans, and domains for each one in the best AI website builders. In short:

  • You want free and you're not in a hurry: Wix, Webnode, or Webador have free plans.
  • You want your own domain from day one at the lowest price: compare Webador and Hostinger, and check the renewal price.
  • You build websites for other businesses: use a platform made for that, where you build and maintain many sites from one place.

4. Write a good prompt

Most builders ask you to describe your business. The more specific you are, the better the first version. Here's an example you can copy and adapt:

"Family-owned auto repair shop in Iztapalapa, Mexico City, with 15 years in business. We do tune-ups, brakes, suspension, and computer diagnostics. Open Monday to Saturday, 9:00 to 19:00. We want customers to send us a WhatsApp message for a quote. Friendly, clear tone, in Mexican Spanish. No made-up testimonials."

The last sentence matters. If you don't ask, many tools fill the page with sample reviews and data.

5. Check what the AI made up

This is the step that separates a website that sells from one that scares people off. Check each of these:

  • Testimonials and reviews. If they're not from real customers, delete them. Link to your Google reviews instead.
  • Numbers. "Over 1,000 happy customers" or "20 years of experience" have to be true.
  • Prices and promotions. Make sure they match what you charge today.
  • Address, hours, and phone. A wrong number costs you customers without you noticing.
  • Stock photos. Replace them with your own. Customers can spot a generic photo.
  • Empty phrases. "Leaders in comprehensive solutions" tells nobody anything. Replace it with what you do and where.

6. Add the WhatsApp button and test on your phone

Put the WhatsApp button at the top, where it's visible, and again at the bottom. Then open the site on your phone, not your computer: that's how almost everyone will see it. According to INEGI's ENDUTIH 2025, 104.9 million people use the internet in Mexico and 97.3% of them go online with a smartphone. Tap every button and confirm it opens the right chat.

7. Publish and connect your domain

On a free plan, your site lives at a provider address like yourbusiness.wixsite.com/site. It's fine for testing. To look professional and be easy to remember, connect your own domain (yourbusiness.com.mx). Almost every paid plan includes the domain free for the first year; after that you pay the renewal. Webador, for example, charges MX$400 a year starting in year two.

8. Let Google know you exist

  • Add your website link to your Google Business Profile (your Google Maps listing). According to Google's own help center, "Customers are 70% more likely to visit and 50% more likely to consider purchasing from businesses with a complete Business Profile."
  • Add it to your Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp Business profile too.
  • If your tool allows it, submit the site to Google Search Console so Google finds it sooner.

Is it really free? What each free plan includes

Tool Free plan? What the free plan limits Price to use your own domain
Wix Yes wixsite.com subdomain, Wix ads, 500 MB, can't accept payments From MX$125 a month, billed yearly
Webador Yes No domain, essential features only From MX$50 a month the first year (promotion), then MX$100, billed yearly
Webnode Yes, with AI generator Webnode branding and no domain Premium package
Durable Yes 300 AI credits, durable.site subdomain From US$22 a month
Hostinger 14-day trial You must pick a plan to publish From MX$32.99 a month paying for 48 months; renews at MX$149.99
Squarespace No, 14-day trial with no card You need a paid plan to publish From MX$170 a month

Prices taken from each provider's official pages on November 3, 2026; they change often and vary by country. Sources: Wix, Webador, Webnode, Durable, Hostinger, and Squarespace.

Watch out for two common traps:

  • The renewal price. "From X pesos" deals usually require paying for several years upfront and then go up. At Hostinger, the Premium plan goes from MX$32.99 to MX$149.99 a month at renewal.
  • The "free" domain. It's free for the first year. Ask what the renewal costs.

Does Google penalize websites made with AI?

Not for being made with AI. Google's Search team put it in writing in its guidance on AI-generated content, signed by Danny Sullivan and Chris Nelson in February 2023:

"Appropriate use of AI or automation is not against our guidelines."

In the same guidance, they draw the line:

"Using automation—including AI—to generate content with the primary purpose of manipulating ranking in search results is a violation of our spam policies."

In practice, for a local business website, this means:

  • What Google rewards is useful, true information: what you do, where, when you're open, and how to reach you.
  • Stuffing the page with generic text to "rank" doesn't help. Google asks for content "created primarily for people," according to its guide on creating helpful, reliable, people-first content.
  • Your photos, your reviews, and your real details are what no AI can make up, and that's exactly what sets you apart.

Common mistakes when building a website with AI

  • Publishing the first version without reading it. AI writes with confidence even when it's wrong.
  • Building many pages when one is enough. A local business almost always needs a single page: what you do, where, hours, photos, reviews, and WhatsApp.
  • Forgetting the phone. If the WhatsApp button isn't on the first screen on mobile, it gets lost.
  • Staying on the free subdomain forever. It's for testing, not for your business card.
  • Not updating it. A website with old hours is worse than no website. If maintenance worries you, see how much website maintenance costs.

FAQ

Can I create a website with AI for free?

Yes. Wix, Webnode, Webador, and Durable have free plans that include their AI builder. The site lives on the provider's subdomain (for example, yourbusiness.wixsite.com) and some show ads. To use your own domain, you need a paid plan.

What's the best AI to create a website?

It depends on what you need it for. To try it for free, Wix or Webnode. To get your own domain at the lowest price, compare Webador and Hostinger and check the renewal. For more polished design, Squarespace or Framer. If you build websites for other businesses, a reseller platform like The Biz Layer. We compare them in the best AI website builders.

How long does it take AI to create a website?

The first version takes anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes, depending on the tool. Reviewing the text, swapping photos, adding WhatsApp, and connecting the domain takes one to three hours if you have your information ready.

Does Google penalize websites made with artificial intelligence?

No. Google says appropriate use of AI is not against its guidelines. What it does penalize is content generated to manipulate search results. A website with your business's real information doesn't have that problem.

Do I need to know how to code to create a website with AI?

No. AI builders like Wix, Webnode, Webador, or Squarespace work without code: you describe your business, the AI builds the site, and you edit it with clicks. Tools like Lovable are closer to programming, even though you use them by chat.

What do I need for my website to show up on Google?

Publish it on your own domain, include your name, business type, address, and hours as text (not only in images), link it from your Google Business Profile, and submit it to Google Search Console. For local searches, Google says "Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity," so your reviews and a complete listing matter as much as the website.

If you build websites for other businesses

If you're a freelancer, a social media manager, or run a small agency, the steps change: you don't build one website, you build many, and each one needs upkeep. The Biz Layer is a platform for freelancers, social media managers, and small agencies that sell websites to local businesses and charge them a monthly fee. You build each business's site from a short form in about a minute, the AI makes changes by chat, and a change only goes live if the site still works. Building is free; you pay once a client's site is on their domain.
